DESCRIPTION OF THE MASTER MENU SCREEN RELEASE 3.10 PAGE 1 OF 6
The Master Menu screen allows you to get into any of the system's major func-
tions, EXCEPT the Flight Plan function. To get into the Flight Plan function,
you must first select a trip by pressing T (even if you have already done a
flight plan). This is to insure that you get the correct trip and that all the
courses and distances are re-calculated using the most current data. When the
Trip file screen appears use the PgUp and PgDn keys to display the desired trip
routing on the screen. Then you can press F to go to the Flight Plan function.
It is recommended that data files (those files with names ending in .NAV or
.TRP) be kept on a separate diskette or in a separate sub-directory from the
programs and other required files. This will facilitate making backup copies
of data, and the installation of new releases of the Flight Plan System.
Note: all files OTHER than those with names ending in .NAV or .TRP must be kept
on the PROGRAM diskette or in the PROGRAM sub-directory. If you have only one
disk drive, you can keep .NAV and .TRP files on the program diskette, but there
may be less space for data files.
WARNING: Do NOT switch DATA diskettes unless you are in the Master Menu screen.
Failure to heed this rule may result in destruction of your data files!
DESCRIPTION OF THE MASTER MENU SCREEN PAGE 2 OF 6
Following is an explanation of each of the available Master Menu functions:
N = Navigation aid file maintenance screen. This allows you to add, delete and
make changes to navaid data. You can have any number of different Navaid
files, each with a maximum from 31 to 1,279 different navigation aids.
(The maximum size can be increased or decreased). The Navaid file to be
used is selected with the (C)hange function, described on screen page 4.
T = Trip file screen. This allows you to add and delete trips, and to add and
delete waypoints within individual trips. You can have any number of dif-
ferent trip FILES. Each trip FILE can hold up to 31 different TRIPS.
Each TRIP can have up to 16 LEGS (in addition to the departure point).
The Trip file you want to use is selected with the (C)hange function.
Each of the above functions has its own HELP screens for more information.
DESCRIPTION OF THE MASTER MENU SCREEN PAGE 3 OF 6
P = specify the PATH for data files. The path is the disk drive and/or sub-
directory specification, for example B: or \FPLANS\ or D:\FP\DATA\. Sub-
directory names can contain only the letters A-Z and the numerals 0-9.
If data files are on the default disk drive, as they would be on most hard
disk installations, you can specify just the path, leaving out the drive
letter. If you specify an invalid path, or one that your computer can't
recognize, an error message will flash on the bottom line of the screen
and you will have the opportunity to correct the error.
If your data is on the default drive or in the default sub-directory,
just press the Enter key by itself to specify this - it isn't necessary
to type in the path. You can press Esc if you want to cancel this func-
tion, unless the existing specification is invalid.
If you change the path, you will be required to enter new navaid and trip
file names.
If you are changing data diskettes in the SAME drive, you do not need to
re-specify the drive. Change data diskettes ONLY when you are in the
Master Menu screen (or DOS).
DESCRIPTION OF THE MASTER MENU SCREEN PAGE 4 OF 6
C = CHANGE file names, for both Navaid and Trip files. Here is where you
enter the name of the navigation aid and trip files you wish to use.
A navaid file can have up to 1,279 entries, and you can have as many dif-
ferent navaid files as disk(ette) space permits.
A trip file can contain up to 31 different trip routings; each trip can
have up to 16 legs (17 waypoints including the departure point). But you
can have as many different trip files as disk(ette) space permits.
A file name can have from 1 to 8 characters. These characters must be
letters A-Z or numerals 0-9. Lowercase letters are automatically conver-
ted to uppercase. A file name should be meaningful - for example, the
name TEXAS is easier to remember than something like TRIPDAT1. It is sug-
gested that different trip files be used for flights into different areas.
For example, the author used one called ARIZNMEX for flying into Arizona
and New Mexico.
If a file whose name you have given doesn't exist yet, that's OK - it will
automatically be created for you when you start entering data.

D = select the unit in which DISTANCE and velocity (airspeed and ground speed)
are entered and displayed. Each time you press D, the unit changes (watch
the solid block opposite the "D = change Distance" caption while you press
the D key repeatedly).
All distances and velocities are always stored by the program in statute
miles. The program will automatically convert to and from this unit each
time a distance or velocity is entered or displayed. Therefore changing
the unit of display does not affect your data files.
V = Change the color scheme on your VIDEO display. Press V and you will see a
display of all the available color schemes. You can select one of ten
different color schemes by entering a number from 0 to 9. This selection
affects all video displays in the Flight Plan System. If you are using a
monochrome monitor or a laptop computer, select 0 (zero).

Q = QUIT and go back to DOS. If you Quit or otherwise exit from the Master
Menu screen, the path and file names and video option will automatically
be stored on disk, so they will come up the next time you use the system.
H = HELP - displays the explanatory information you are reading now.
